Sprouting

There’s going to be a lot of gardening posts this year. The cosmos have started sprouting, and yesterday morning I noticed the spinach poking through. It’s getting very exciting.

Turns out that in one day the spinach shot up and is now transferred to another tray. Above is first thing in the morning, below is by lunchtime 😀

Same with the cosmos, above is morning, and below afternoon.

More things are starting to pop up so will have to keep a close eye on everything to make sure I give it the best chance of making it and learn as I go.

Growing season March 2022 #2

More seeds sown today, new plants in the garden and the other morning I decided to build another pond! Will do a post for that in the next few days. Growing things and nature gives a good feeling, and am hoping to cater for more wildlife this year. Extra flowers, herbs and plants so lots for everyone.

The window sill pots are in use again with new seeds.

The broccoli made it through last years caterpillars, lets see if it can this year and actually turn into broccoli 🥦

New flowers are taking well, and hopfully all the other bulbs and seeds will come up too, hope there is room for it all.

Growing season 2022

This years growing season is now well underway, a bit of warm and sunshine really does go a long way to get everything going. The peppers I have been growing from seed are now doing well, if not a little cramped in their current state, but today I will sorting that out. I have about 9 plants!! So we’ll see if they all make it.

Peppers

Inspired by a love a of flowers and seeing someone else start these from seed, I have some comos flowers on the go now, and thought some coneflowers for good measure. I would lots of bright and more things for the insects. Fingers crossed they make it.

Cosmos and Coneflower seeds

The brocoli I started from seed last year has hung on, through being pretty much decimated by cabbage white caterpillars, and although not done much over the winter, i will give them a chance to get big and repot them soon. Turns out we have 4 on the go.

Brocoli that survived the butterflies last year

I let the wild strawberries run riot and they have pretty much taken over a whole bed planter, so I am leaving them to it. But two of my other plants that had great big strawberries last year have now been moved to give them a better chance, they were a bit cramped and in the dark, so hoping for them to spread a bit and I can have more of those.

Relocated straberry plants

While sorting all the other things and looking for bugs, I happened to find another 3 sprouting cherry plants. I suspect these are ones I had thought the seeds were no good as they hadn’t taken in their pots in the kitchen, and they were discarded in the dirt that went under the brocoli, but here they are.

New cherry sprouts

More planted today as well so there will be lots to look after if it all makes it.

Gooseberry Bush buds
Blueberry plant

I can see all sorts of plants and flowers poking their way through, I suspect the calendula has spread as I can see small new ones appearing, and some poppies have started already where they were last year. And I may have scattered some of last years seeds, and new ones. Now we wait…

Carrots from seed – updates from the sill

My kitchen window sill has now become the seed growing spot. I see them every morning and throughout the day, so realised that is their best chance of light every day, and general survival. After planting out the peppers, I started carrots at the at the same time as the broccoli and they finally started, its taken a week for these seeds to get going at all, but within a day of them showing signs of pushing through, we have more. It is on! 🥕

22.08.21

Hopefully they will all make it and by the time they need repotting I may have upgraded some others. Although they do all the hard work by growing, there is much to do to give them the best conditions to do that in.

28.08.21

It’s growing companions on the sill for now are a slow starting pepper which was planted at the same time as the others, and some mixed leaf lettuce which appears to be coming along nicely. It will just be a mission to keep this for me, slugs have always been my memsis for growing salad so fingers crossed this year I find a natural way to keep them away.

Broccoli

I have started some seeds for carrots and broccoli, but so far the broc is winning by a mile (although it’s not a competition and I’m not judging them on it), but in just half a day, magic happened. From yesterday morning first thing it started…

this was at 6:08 am
By 1:30pm, they had really shot up!
By 8:00pm, all standing up and turned darker green.
New surroundings

And today they start their outdoor adventure, we shall see if they make it against the elements and the wildlife. I will do some learning along the way I am sure. Last time I did brocoli a number of year ago, caterpillars got them, so we’ll see how it goes.

Growing update – 13.08.21

Things are moving along with growing new plants. The peppers are doing their thing and will now be given their own pots.

I have two ‘trees’ on the go as well that I mistakenly thought were cherries, but quickly realised they weren’t. They just appeared sprouting so not down to me. Still haven’t managed a definitive ID, but might be plum 🤔

I also decided to plant a tangerine seed. It took a few weeks and I thought it hadn’t taken, but patience is a good thing when growing things.

Its been a slow grower so far but has just started a few new leaves, so its looking better on the citrus front.

It all has to start somewhere.

Peppers

On my journey of growing things, I am trying seeds wherever I find them. I put a few sweet pepper (capsicum) seeds in to grow before throwing away. And they have sprouted 😁 I really don’t know where I will grow all this stuff. I have more seed planting planned for the weekend as well after buying a pack for some winter veg. But the potatoes are ready for digging up – I actually had a few for dinner the other night, which means there will be some space at the back of the garden. We shall see how it all goes.

I’ll try and share updates of these little guys, and my other projects if I remember to take pictures as I go!
