Hegdegog!

I really didn’t think I would ever see one in my garden as it appears to be fully fenced. But a few nights ago, our dog just wouldn’t come in and was extra interested in the far corner. I jokingly said its probably a hedgehog not believing it could be. But I was actually right!

Because the dog sniffed around so much, I think it was quite scared. I probably didn’t help by shining a light on it and taking pictures but wanted to document it being there.

I now know there is a small hole at the back of the fence behind the compost bin, so am glad nature found its way in. Our garden has an awful lot of snails, slugs and worms so think it’s well catered for. Hopefully it will visit again some time.

World Bee Day 2021

I have been naming more bees this year from my old pics and seems there are more than I thought. There is a Bee Talk this evening with the Wessex Museum which I am quite excited about ‘attending’ so may know more later. But for now, here is a small selection of bees that I think I have named correctly for you to enjoy.

Buff-tailed bumblebee
Long horned bee
Oblong woolcarter bee
Carpenter Bee
Red tailed bumble bee
European Dark Bee
Hairy-footed flower bee
Ruderal bumblebee
Amegilla bee
Early Bumblebee
Honey Bee

Painting – Oil paints #2

My painting isn’t coming along as quickly as I would like. Finding the time and the inclination together at the moment is fleeting. Life can be distracting at the best of times, but currently – and rightly so, my brain is occupied by more pressing matters. However, in an attempt to try something from Bob Ross’s series, thought I would try clouds, mountains and trees.

I was not happy with the clouds at all, but since it has dried, I don’t mind them so much, subtle, yet still cloudy. But that is not what I was going for. The mountains went wrong too in my opinion and I just about rescued them.

Then came the foreground. The trees were easy enough, if you seen any of my other paintings, you’ll know I have spent time doing trees already in both watercolour and acrylic, so they were passable in my view.

But then I totally faltered. The middle of the painting went wrong, twice. My want to put in misty hazy trees and some water just didn’t work. I didn’t know what else to do, so put a random cherry tree right in the middle.

So far, learning to paint has been a mixture of relaxing, exciting and mild panic. I am a bit of a perfectionist – having usually worked with intricate detail in black and white (gallery here) painting is quite out of my comfort zone. I’m trying to get over that though and take time and not be too disappointed when it doesn’t work as I would like it to.

A madness now… (poetry)

A madness now

It has descended

And personal rights

Must be defended

From the group

Who seem to feel

They have a right

With no appeal

For others they think

They get to decide

While feeling scared

They want to hide

Behind the ‘new normal’

Insidious veil

The stage has been set

For an epic tale

And now we are here

All that we can know

Is who can you trust

Who is friend from foe?

Bigroot Geranium

This is called a big root geranium. I didn’t know this when I got it, thinking it was just a normal geranium like my grandma used to have. Nope, this one is different.

Starting as just an ordinary small plant i bought for my wedding anniversary a couple of years ago. It’s growing and spreading. Creating a small little patch of green and pink. It’s lovely. Smells a bit weird when you touch the leaves, but the bugs like it.

The bees however, love it. There were 3 different types yesterday, but they move quickly so not the easiest to catch!

I have now taken a section of it and planted in another pot, so I can move some of that awesome pink colour around the garden.

It’s strange you know… (poetry)

It’s strange you know

I can’t deny

How those that chose

To blindly comply

Think it is

Even mildly ok

To force their will

And what they say

Upon those folk

Who choose to hold

And wait to see

If what’s being sold

Is in fact

Another lie

There’s been so many

And how they try

But desperation

Becomes the theme

To embolden the flock

To be extreme

Instead they sound

Like pushers of old

Repeating themselves

Until they are told

Strawberry patches

I bought two strawberry plants a couple of years ago. One with white flowers, one with red flowers. I didn’t realise the red one was just ornamental, or must be as no strawberries on it last year. And so far this year, no red flowers on it either. Maybe the other one took over, as per the picture further down.

These are three different patches of strawberries now flowering. If you didn’t know, strawberries spread, going as far as you let them.

One box now has them all the way along. And, although I didn’t plant any potatoes in this one this year, we have potatoes coming up! I guess I didn’t find all of last years and they’re coming back. Funny because I’ve planted potatoes in the next bed along this year.

At the end of the strawberry box, we also have a mingled corner with rosemary, parsley and winter jasmine.

Lots of green at the moment in the garden with small spots of colour coming through. Another couple of months and I am expecting a lot of colour 🙂 One of last years strawberries below, so I’m hopeful of at least a few more this year!

While looking down… (poetry)

While looking down

They just can’t see

And seems a shock

We want to be free

From their weird

New medical rules

We are not sick

And are not fools

But playing the game

They are in deep

So much on the line

We need to keep

Our wits and senses

As sharp as knives

More than now

It’s about our lives

And what’s to come

The future’s near

And shouldn’t be dark

Or framed with fear

~

But that’s how they are making it
