Proof copy has arrived…

The last few days of waiting for my proofs felt like forever. Today they finally arrived and although I couldn’t wait to get them, now they are here I am relaxed but haven’t started reading yet. I am enjoying them just being real. It’s funny how you can work on something for over a year, yet it still doesn’t seem real until you have the physical copy in your hands. I find this the most nerve wracking bit, getting closer to the final go ahead, which is funny because it comes from me. So for now I shall put aside the writer in me and commence with being the reader and editor, if such a thing is ever really possible. Even so, I do my best.

Rat Skeleton…

I used to collect dead things. I had a small clear cassette box and kept things in there. Its not as bad as it sounds, there was a butterfly that had unfortunately not made it out of the house. Part of a snake skin, a dead bug, and strangely a piece a broken glass – but only because it was quite artistic I remember. That collection has now long since gone, but if I pass something these days, I stop for a moment. To look and think.

This picture was taken in Spain, while out on a nature walk. This was in the wall, in a gap in the bricks. Of course I had to take it out and photograph it, I have never seen a rat skeleton before and found it fascinating. I left it in a small grassy area with some flowers hiding it, having only taken a few photos. I could see my husband wasn’t entirely comfortable with me doing this type of photo shoot with holiday makers walking around. But it always feels a bit special to be able to see what has once been, but in the next stage. I guess this is why I like archaeology so much, especially when they find graves. Because without adding any fantasy or make believe to who, how or why – you are looking at someone who once lived. That bit of evidence is undeniable.

Treat of a sunrise…

It was indeed a treat of a sunrise today. Starting off with oranges and pinks, I did my usual of quietly heading back upstairs to hang out of the upstairs window at an awkward angle (the people who fitted these windows did it with no concern for where the sun would rise or set!). I get the best shot I can but to be fair, nature did all the work.

Rainy Days…

We have a lot of rainy days in England. Sometimes it makes me look out of the window and remember being stuck inside during holidays or weekends. But not in a bad way, most people moan about the weather for that, but for me it gave me a chance to do indoor things. For tv and movies, baking, embroidery, drawing, reading and all the other things I found to do. So rainy days for me usually mean getting stuff done.

Baking – Jam Tarts

It may seem like a silly thing to some people, to really like baking. I’m not overly good at it and am not a big eater, but it’s such an enjoyable activity it makes me wish sometimes I had more imagination for it. Or knowledge of flavours and what goes well with what. But I do not, and I have tried. My brother was a chef for years and my mother cooked well with African influences (she grew up in Uganda), but none of this rubbed off on me.

To try and enjoy cooking and eating a bit more, I decided to look at the processes and the content – i.e calories, carbs, protein and building a balanced meal. Possibly too scientific and not enough creative, who knows. With a recipe though I am usually fine and can pull it off, if I follow it. Once nailed I can improvise a bit, but stray too far from it and it usually goes wrong. My favourite has to be pastries and desserts, this is where I am comfortable.

I also forget how engaging it is, you have to be present, again if you stray mentally, it can go wrong. It’s good exercise, standing and moving to create something tasty. I need to remember all these things and do more baking!

Today we have Jam Tarts – Strawberry, raspberry and apricot.
